The psychological effects of work from home during covid-19 on employees

2020 was a year that shook the entire globe to its core. COVID-19 a deadly virus hit the unprepared world and caused the deaths of millions. A pandemic forced us towards a major lifestyle change which only included staying within the four walls of our homes or else it could be a major threat to one’s health. Disruption of everyday routine, and shutting down of schools, colleges and offices led to major changes like the downfall of the economy and also people’s mental health. To slow the transmission of the virus, COVID-19 prohibited a significant portion of the population from travelling to their places of employment. It further led to firms and workers looking for alternate work settings, particularly in busy urban locations. To guarantee that the transition to home-based work is seamless, companies were working hard to assess their rules, procedures, and guidelines. Employees, on the contrary, were trying to figure out a balance between their job and home, child care, and coping with budgetary limitations as a result of salary decreases. Companies were also doing layoffs and a lot of people lost their jobs which led to a rise in suicides and depression cases

Psychological effects of working from home:

Isolation: Humans are social beings and being kept in isolation for too long can adversely affect the mental health of a person. Working in an office environment helps you interact with your colleagues and seniors which in turn helps with physical and emotional wellness, but COVID makes it impossible for people to go out of their homes making them feel lonely and alone. Burnout: Constant connectivity with work leads to working for longer hours. Taking breaks feels unnecessary because one is working in the comfort of their home. Both of these issues raise the level of stress and anxiety. Health: People who work excessive shifts and forget to take breaks experience back and joint discomfort, which worsens their mental health. Depression and physical chronic illness share neurological connections and have an impact on the same region of the brain.

Working from home has acted as a blessing and a curse for many people.
